Lodging
Quito offers a wide range of lodging options across the city, where students will be able to find a place to suit their tastes, needs and budgets.
Host Families
The best way to discover a culture and to be part of it is to live with a host family. This is the most recommended by schools, since it allows students to practice what they've learnt in class with the family they're staying with.
Host family service is usually offered by schools in the US$12-20 per day bracket. This value will vary depending on the number of meals taken at home, clothes washing, as well as the location of the family. In general, we would recommend this option for students as the best for learning, budget and security.
Students' Residences
Some schools offer student accommodation as part of their programs. This option allows students to mix with fellow students from around the world and also allows a greater degree of independence than a home-stay. The cost of this option is US$7-15 per day, depending on the location of the residence, shared, dormitory or private bedrooms, as well as the facilities of each residence.
Hotels and Hostales
Quito is awash with very competitively-priced accommodation. You can find somewhere to suit anyone. In some cases, students can book rooms through their school and obtain a discount, while many hotels and hostales will offer significant discounts for guests who stay long periods, particularly over 4 weeks.
Prices for this option are between US$7 and US$20 per day, depending on the location of the accommodation, private or shared bedrooms and bathrooms, etc. Some places will include breakfast included.
Renting an Apartment
If a student is considering staying in the country for several months, then renting a place is a good option. There are plenty of options in Quito to choose from, although finding the right area is confusing at the beginning for someone new to the city. Prices for apartments vary according to their location in the city, but a rough estimate in the modern (northern) part of the city is a monthly rent of between US$300-450 for a one-bedroom apartment, and US$400-600 for a two- or three-bedroom apartment. These prices are usually exclusive of phone, water and electricity bills. A deposit of one to two months is common.
