Find the Bed That’s Right for You

Where to stay in Quito will be one of your most significant decisions on a trip to Ecuador. The capital is the tourist and transport hub of the country, and the base from which to make various excursions: to the highlands, the rainforest, the Pacific coast or the Galápagos Islands. Visitors often find themselves coming in and out of Quito several times, so their hotel becomes a home base. It's important that it's a comfortable establishment where you receive a friendly welcome, where messages are kept for you and where you can leave excess luggage you don't want to take on the road.

The majority of hotel and hostal (which translates as a more economical small hotel, not necessarily a ‘youth hostel’ at all) accommodation is in the Mariscal quarter, in northern Quito. This is the most popular quarter in the capital for travellers, replete with just about every amenity he or she might need: internet cafés, money changers, laundries, dozens of tour operators, restaurants, bars, etc, etc.

In the last few years, there has been a movement back to staying in the Old Town of Quito. With the historic centre’s regeneration and much-improved safety, a handful of new hotels have opened up catering to travellers who wish to stay in the capital’s historic and romantic heart. You can find details of these here . Boutique hotels of no more than 40 rooms are also a Quito phenomenon of the last years. You can find out more about these here .

The Quito region also has some fantastic places to stay, ranging from hotels in towns to the rural hacienda-hotels of the countryside. These make great bases for exploration and for meeting people. For some pampering, we suggest you head to our spas page where you can find out more about these establishments.

Quito’s hotels offer excellent value for money. However, you should be aware that prices tend to vary from published rates according to season and your personal negotiation skills. Whether or not the 12% tax and 10% service charge are included in the price of the room should be established before making reservations.

You can find the complete list of hotels in Quito here, which is a database searchable by type of establishment (as classified by the Ministry of Tourism) and by zone in Quito. You can also find recommendations from Trip Advisor, and we will be bringing more third-party recommendations to the site soon.
