This is the finest example of Latin American baroque architecture. Its façade is its own work of art carved out of Andean stone. Inside, the altar piece was gilded by Bernardo de Legarda and represents the four main religious communities evangelized in Quito.

The altars, pulpits, pillars, arches are all covered with gold leaf. The special features of the church are its baroque carvings – geometric shapes, flowers, fruit, garlands- plated with 23 carat gold. This covers the whole church in a golden hue. This Jesuit church has also been known as “Solomon’s Temple in South America”, the “Golden Ember” and “Best Jesuit temple in the world. “ With its ornate and gilded decoration it is considered “ the Baroque jewel of America and the world”.

Within its altar you will see image of Quito’s founders and famous religious figures including San Francisco de Assisi, Santo Domingo, San Agustin, Luis Gonzaga, Mariana de Jesus and Ignatius of Loyola. On the high altar are the Virgin, Joseph and the Holy Trinity.

A work that also stands out is the image of Hell (attributed to Hernando de la Cruz) It is a depiction of the home of Lucifer, who punishes people for the seven deadly sins. And as recent as the early twentieth century, mothers were known to bring their children to see the painting and warn them that this is where they would go if they did not obey the rules of the Catholic religion.

In1996 there was a fire in the church that destroyed part of the alter on the right. The church was closed for a few years so that restoration could be completed. If you stand under the center dome and look up, you will see the faces of the angels one of which is black, reminiscent of the smoke from that unfortunate fire.

It is important to know that you are not allowed to take photos within the church to protect the gold leaf. However there are many postcards and books available to help you preserve the memory of this amazing place.
