Pululahua Crater
Pululahua crater, an active volcano thousands of years ago, is today a peaceful valley perpetually dampened by the mist. The name comes from the Quichua words, “smoke from the water”. It forms part of the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, located 10 minutes north of the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo.
The reserve covers an area of 13,000 hectares and contains approximately 1,200 vegetable species plus a diversity of bird, mammal and insect species.
A path goes down to the crater: it takes about 20 minutes to get down and 45 to go up. There are handcraft stands and a restaurant by the road in the area near the crater entrance. Two hotels are located within the crater basin
